When I first decided to get into cake decorating and start a business, I did it because I thought it would be fun and because it was a great creative outlet. I didn’t realize how much the Lord would use it to bless others, to meet people, and to build and maintain relationships. This is now one of my favorite parts (and really, the driving force) of the process – the people, the stories, and how it’s so much more than “just a cake.”
This cake, Summer’s cake, is a great example of this. I met Summer and Aaron almost two years ago, when a life threatening infection, sepsis and complicated hospital course brought Aaron to our unit. The Lord first allowed our paths to cross then, and I watched this family walk through a trial of turbulence and uncertainty, all the while holding onto God’s promises and faithfulness . . . in a way I had never seen before. Their faith was on display so clearly and I cannot tell you how many lives they impacted during this season. Their walk with the Lord strengthened my faith in a new way, that I just can’t put into words. Many nurses, doctors and other staff fell in love with their family, so you can imagine how excited I was when Aaron emailed me, requesting a cake for Summer.
Summer had told Aaron that she wanted one of my cakes for her birthday, but suspected that he had forgotten. Meanwhile, he had been emailing me about the cake, and I arranged to deliver it – which made it even more of a surprise. I thought it would be fun to involve my co-workers somehow, so I had them sign a birthday card to bring along. I even managed to catch one of Summer and Aaron’s favorite physicians on his last day at the hospital and had him sign it!
Aaron told me that Summer loves the beach, so I started planning the cake . . . I made details out of fondant and modeling chocolate: a surfboard, beach ball, sunglasses, waves and chocolate shells. I also knew that she loves monograms, so I piped her monogram onto the bottom of some flip-flops. This was my favorite detail of the cake.
It was so much fun to deliver the cake and to surprise Summer. Aaron did such a great job of keeping it all a secret! It was an honor to plan and bring this cake to life for this amazing family. I’m so thankful that God used it to bless them and to maintain a relationship with them! Happy Birthday Summer! I will make you a cake any day 🙂
